What is VoIP?

[/wen_title] [wen_content]

Voice over Internet Protocol (or VoIP) is, as the name suggests, a way to make calls over an Internet protocol: a voice signal is converted to a data packet then travels over the Internet to the person you are calling; these data packets are then converted back into sound. VoIP calls can be made using a computer, a special VoIP phone, or a regular telephone using an adaptor. Because of the way that a VoIP solution operates, it is generally much more cost-efficient and flexible for businesses than a traditional phone system.

Aside from some minimal upfront costs associated with deploying a new phone system, businesses that have switched to a VoIP solution have seen drastic savings on their phone bills: the monthly fees associated with VoIP are lower than with a traditional phone system, long-distance calls are significantly cheaper, and you typically need less equipment (which meansreduced maintenance and replacement costs).

In addition to being more cost-efficient than traditional phone operating systems, VoIP is also much more flexible. Since phone calls are delivered via the Internet, your phone is no longer tied to your office; you can make calls from your VoIP device as long as you have an Internet connection available. It is also easy to add users to your VoIP service, as opposed to adding additional lines to a traditional phone system.
